It was my birthday. It was also the day my home in Midland was inundated with water from Wixom Lake. I remember the alert coming over our phones. My wife and I grabbed our pre-packed bags, and we and my 94-year-old mother-in-law drove through the rapidly rising flood waters to safety. The next day, my wife knelt down and cried as we watched people kayak around the dream house that we had bought six months before. Flood mitigation? Yeah, I'm kind of all about it. I've organized my block and had Midland Mayor Maureen Donker, people from Fisher Contracting and anyone else I could think of talk to us and explain what they are doing about the flooding that has been coming at a much more frequent rate due to climate change.
